Greenwood Equipment Welding carries a portable boring bar on the truck, which makes worn pins a jobsite repair instead of a teardown. Every pinned joint on an excavator or loader wears the same way: the bushing goes first, then the bore behind it stretches oval, and from there no amount of new hardware stays tight.
What the repair looks like
- Block and lock out the machine, pull the pin, measure the bore against spec.
- Mount the boring bar to the workpiece and confirm alignment across both ears.
- Weld the bore up with continuous buildup passes.
- Machine back to the specified diameter, round and on the original centerline.
- Press bushings where the joint uses them, fit the pin, grease and cycle.
Centerline matters more than diameter. A bore machined round but off axis loads the pin in a bind and starts the wear cycle again immediately. Getting the bar aligned across both ears is most of the skill in this trade.

Line boring questions
How do I know a pin bore needs line boring instead of just new pins?
Put a bar on the bucket and rock it. If the pin visibly shifts inside the bore, or new pins and bushings went sloppy again within months, the bore itself is worn oval. New pins in an oval bore fail fast because they only touch at two points. Machining the bore back round is the fix that lasts.
What does mobile line boring cost?
One position, meaning one bore or a matched pair on the same axis, runs $650 to $1,200 depending on diameter, depth and how much welding buildup the bore needs first. A full day across multiple positions runs $1,400 to $2,400. Both figures sit on our pricing page next to everything else.
Do you bore on the machine or does the boom come off?
On the machine, that is the whole point. The boring bar mounts to the workpiece, we weld the bore up, machine it to size, and press bushings where the design calls for them. The machine is blocked and locked out, but it never leaves your yard.
